Honour killing isn't restricted to north India: a young Reddy girl and her Dalit husband were stoned to death on Wednesday night. Six people, including the parents of Baddam Swapna Reddy (22), were arrested and charged with murder on Thursday.

Swapna, belonging to the high-caste Reddy community, married Sunkari Srinivas (28) about three months ago. The couple was found stoned to death on the outskirts of Krishnajiwadi village in Nizamabad. Swapna's father B Lal Reddy, mother Radha, uncle N Ram Reddy and three aunts - Yadava, Padma and Shoba - were all booked for murder and under SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.

Cops were deployed in the village after locals staged a dharna outside the girl's parents' house on Thursday.

According to villagers, Srinivas - who was first married to Savithri and has two daughters Nandini and Harini - met Swapna, fell in love and the two got married at Vemalavada temple in Karimnagar district about three months ago.

Srinivas hadn't divorced his first wife but she apparently had no objections to his second marriage. Fearing that their families would not accept their union, the couple began living in Hyderabad after their wedding. Srinivas, a trained computer mechanic, worked with a private firm.

Locals said the couple returned to the village on Wednesday and tried to convince the elders in Swapna's family to accept their marriage. The girl's family members were still in a rage. Later in the day, they allegedly descended on Srinivas's house in the village and attacked the couple.

Kamareddy DSP D Udaykumar Reddy said all the guilty in the double murder would be brought to book. Locals apprehend that those who carried out the crime belonged to the upper caste and hence would get away.

"About 20 members of Swapna's family came barging into our house late last night, dragged them out and lynched them in front of me," said Savithri, Srinivas's first wife, who is now a witness to the death of her husband and his second wife.

Bhopal gas disaster's legacy lives on 25 years later

Today is December 3rd 2009. Exactly 25 years ago on this day, one of the worst industrial disaster in Indian history happened in Bhopal. Thousands of people died, lakhs of people are still affected by this disaster. At least now the government should take some immediate measures and provide some proper medical attention to all the people affected in that area.

The Union Carbide (now Dow Chemical) disaster in Bhopal, Bhopal disaster or Bhopal gas tragedy was an industrial disaster that took place at a Union Carbide pesticide plant in the Indian city of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. At midnight on 3 December 1984, the plant accidentally released methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas, exposing more than 500,000 people to MIC and other chemicals. The first official immediate death toll was 2,259. The government of Madhya Pradesh has confirmed a total of 3,787 deaths related to the gas release.Others estimate 8,000-10,000 died within 72 hours and 25,000 have since died from gas-related diseases.

Some 25 years after the gas leak, 390 tonnes of toxic chemicals abandoned at the Union Carbide plant continue to pollute the ground water in the region and affects thousands residents of Bhopal who depend on it. There are currently civil and criminal cases related to the disaster ongoing in the United States District Court, Manhattan and the District Court of Bhopal, India against Union Carbide, now owned by Dow Chemical Company, with arrest warrants pending against Warren Anderson, CEO of Union Carbide at the time of the disaster.

Summary of background and causes:

During the night of December 2–3, 1984, large amounts of water entered tank 610, containing 42 tonnes of methyl isocyanate. The resulting reaction increased the temperature inside the tank to reach over 200 °C (392 °F), raising the pressure to a level the tank was not designed to withstand. This forced the emergency venting of pressure from the MIC holding tank, releasing a large volume of toxic gases. The reaction sped up because of the presence of iron in corroding non-stainless steel pipelines. A mixture of poisonous gases flooded the city of Bhopal, causing great panic as people woke up with a burning sensation in their lungs. Thousands died immediately from the effects of the gas and many were trampled in the panic.

Hundreds of children are still being born with birth defects as a result of the world's worst industrial disaster 25 years ago. They are demanding that the Indian government provide immediate medical care and research the "hidden" health impacts.

The true legacy of the disaster is only now coming to light. The Indian government stopped all research on the medical effects of the gas cloud 14 years ago, without explanation. Despite the country's supreme court ordering that the children of victims receive insurance, more than 100,000 remain without cover.

Satinath Sarangi of the Sambhavna Trust, which helps to rehabilitate victims, said that the Bhopal victims' penury and low social status meant few are prepared to help. No one, he says, has taken responsibility for cleaning up the site and paying the high cost of medical bills."Because these people are poor or from a minority or lower caste no one seems to care. Their lives and their children are being sacrificed for the cause of industrial progress," Sarangi said.

One of the mothers, Kesar Bhai, held her 12-year-old son Suraj in her arms. She had inhaled the noxious fumes in 1984 and was hospitalised but recovered. Her son, Suraj, was born brain damaged and cannot sit or talk. "My husband is a labourer. We have no money to spend on our son. He cannot even eat on his own. I get free medical care for my breathing difficulties because I am a gas victim. My child does not get any help but he has been affected," she said.

Other children's growth had been stunted, said campaigners, because there has been still no clean-up of the Bhopal plant despite a promise from the prime minister in 2006. So far, less than 20% of the funds set aside to dismantle and make safe the plant have been spent. The disused Union Carbide factory contains about 8,000 tonnes of carcinogenic chemicals which continue to leach out and contaminate water supplies used by 30,000 local people. The clean-up has been stalled by a mixture of bureaucratic indifference, legal actions and rows over corporate responsibility.

In a grotesque incident, three educated sons of a UP Power Corporation engineer, along with a cousin, punched, kicked and beat their mother to death with a rod believing that she had been possessed by the spirit of a dead relative.

The bizarre violence didn't end there. The foursome then tried to "sacrifice" a sister-in-law in an attempt to bring their dead mother back to life. They also beat up and injured their sister, her husband, the husband's father and two sisters, when they tried to intervene. All except their brother-in-law, Rohit Kumar, had to be hospitalized. The gruesome drama lasted from 9pm to 10.30pm.

The eldest of the three brothers, Rohit Gautam, 28, is an engineer in a multinational production unit at Greater Noida. Another brother, Navneet, 26, recently completed his MBA. The youngest, Ashwini, 24, is doing a course in electrical work from a polytechnic. The "exorcism" took place in a respectable, middle class locality in the city.

As news of the violence spread, several hundred residents rushed to the police station to get a glimpse of the "butchers of Vijaynagar". Some agitated residents demanded they be allowed to lynch the culprits. The area police remained as involved with crowd control as they were with the investigation.

Rohit Kumar, whose wife, Renu, is the sister of the three assailants, said: "My mother, Banso Devi, had died two months ago. Soon after that, my brothers-in-law claimed my mother's spirit had possessed their mother, Shashi. On Saturday, they told us that we should perform a havan to exorcise my mother's spirit. We agreed just to make them feel good."

After the havan, Kumar said in the police report, he went home leaving Renu behind. "But about 8.30pm, the brothers phoned me to say Renu was very ill. When I reached there, their mother was having a fit. And the three brothers and their cousin, Kuldeep, 25, were shouting, 'Banso Devi, let go of our mother'."

Kumar said the brothers were kicking and punching their mother, and beating her with a rod, in an attempt to exorcise the spirit. "Soon Shashi Devi, who was around 55, died because of the beating."

The men then turned to Kumar's sister, Ruchi. She later said: "The brothers had become ferocious. They decided that a human sacrifice was needed to bring their mother back to life. They decided I was to be sacrificed. Even as their father, Ranvir Gautam, my sister, Lalita and sister-in-law, Renu, tried to intervene, they pulled us all into a room and latched the door from inside. They beat us all with rods. My left arm broke and I received head and body injuries. We survived because around 10.30pm, neighbours forced open the door to rescue us. The police also arrived about the same time."

All the assailants, with the exception of Rohit Gautam who is absconding, have been arrested. They have all been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and for "committing an act which, if it results in the victim's death, would make the death appear unintentional".

SSP, Deepak Ratan, said, "This is a case of sheer superstition and blind belief. There was no element of human sacrifice in the goings on, as some would like to believe. But it is tragic that even well educated people can behave in this way. These brothers' mother was ill. Like any patient, she required medical treatment."

Indian Police threw pregnant mother from train for not paying them bribe

Police officers taking bribe is not new in India. Its their bread and butter :)
But killing a pregnant women when the lady did not pay them bribe is totally unacceptable. Such policemen should be thrown out of the department immediately.

Two police officers in India have been arrested after allegedly throwing a pregnant woman and her three-year-old daughter off a moving train for refusing to pay a bribe of 100 rupees.

According to a police report, Ram Singh and Sudhir Singh demanded the bribe on Thursday when Dinesh Kumar Lodh and his pregnant wife Kavita attempted to carry his bicycle into the train compartment when the couple boarded a train in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

When Mrs Lodh said she was not carrying enough money, and instead offered a 5 rupee bribe, the railway officers allegedly pushed her from the train.

As she struggled to grab hold of the door, she fell under the wheels of the train and was killed instantly, witnesses said. The little girl, who had been sitting on her mother's lap, also fell out of the moving train but escaped with minor injuries.

Police bribes are a part of daily life in India, but this incident has caused widespread anger.

As news of the incident reached the family's village, a mob headed for the next stop - Tikuniya railway halt - where they attacked the two constables, causing multiple injuries.

In a bizarre incident, a 25-year-old gardener in Orissa, furious after being bitten by a snake, grabbed the reptile, tore it apart and chewed bits of its flesh.

The incident took place on Saturday in a government-managed park at Baramunda area on the outskirts of the state capital Bhubaneswar.

The snake had bitten Ramesh Kumar Jamda, the gardener of the park, when he was removing weeds, Oriya news paper Sambad reported on Sunday.

A furious Jamda then caught hold of the snake and chewed parts of its body and swallowed the flesh.

Jamda then fell unconscious and was taken by other park employees to the local hospital. While the snake died on the spot, Jamda managed to survive after treatment, the paper said.

“I was very angry when the snake bit me on my finger. I chewed parts of its body to take revenge,” Jamda was quoted as saying. The paper has not said if the snake was a poisonous one.

In a shocking incident, a die-hard fan of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi killed his father for not casting his vote for the superstar’s newly formed Praja Rajyam Party (PRP).
The incident took place in Visakhapatnam district in coastal Andhra after the first phase of polling Thursday but came to light Saturday.

The police said Kosuru Rajubabu, a labourer in Acchampet, became angry after learning that his 55-year-old father Kosuru Bullabbai cast his vote for Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and stabbed him to death Thursday night.

Rajubabu, 23, with the help of few villagers buried his father on the village outskirts the same night and the next day told the people that he died a natural death. The villagers, however, grew suspicious and one of them informedthe police.

The police arrested Rajubabu, who confessed that he murdered his father for not voting for PRP. A police officer said further investigations were on.

Rajubabu is said to be an ardent fan of superstar Chiranjeevi since his childhood and had been campaigning for PRP launched by the actor recently.

His father was a supporter of legendary actor N.T. Rama Rao and the TDP founded by him.The father and son had a heated argument before the polling about whom to vote for.

Rajubabu tried to convince his father that he support the PRP. Bullabbai was adamant on voting for TDP. He later agreed to his son’s suggestion and promised to vote for the PRP.

After the voting, Rajubabu was enraged when his father told him that he voted for the TDP.The two had another round of heated argument and the son killed his father the same night.

A 10-year-old girl in an Orissa village was beheaded by her grandfather, who believed that sowing seeds mixed with her blood would yield a bumper crop, police said on Monday.

The barbaric incident, spurred by age-old superstitions, took place on Sunday at the tribal-populated Adapathar village in Sambalpur district, over 450 km from Bhubaneshwar. The heinous crime came to light after villagers caught the man, Rajesh Hembram, and handed him over to the police.

Hembram, 52, has around three acres of agricultural land. To get a good harvest, he had planned in advanced to sow seeds mixed with the blood of his granddaughter on Akshaya Tritiya on Monday, a day considered auspicious by Hindus, police said.

"He cut off his granddaughter Bernaka Kandulana's head with an axe in a room when nobody was at home and drained her blood into a pot," P C Nayak, inspector in charge of the local police station, told IANS.

"We found some seeds in a steel pot that were mixed with blood," he said. "The man has been arrested and has confessed that he kept it to sow in his field on Akshaya Tritiya," he said.

Bernaka's head and the remaining part of the body were also found in the same room, the official added.

PM Manmohan Singh's security blanket caused the death of a kidney patient

We often face the problem due to security cover of VVIP's. Most common problem is traffic congestion. We need to wait for hours on a signal just to allow the VVIP move smoothly. Why always common man has to suffer?
While important people like the PM need to be given total security cover, there must be better ways of providing it. It’s bad enough when VIP security disrupts traffic on the roads for much longer than needed.
But when a city’s most important hospital becomes off bounds for patients urgently needing life-saving attention, it is totally unacceptable. If providing security to the PM on campus means disrupting the functioning of the hospital’s essential and emergency services, even for a few minutes, the function must be held elsewhere. Ceremonies are not and cannot be more important than saving lives — least of all for a hospital.

Prime minister Manmohan Singh's security blanket caused the death of a kidney patient at the gates of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGI) while the PM addressed a convocation inside.

Sumit Verma, 35, a kidney patient, was rushed from Ambala, 45 km away, after he developed a cardiac problem and needed urgent attention at the PGI emergency. But because of special security arrangements in view of the PM's visit, his van was made to shuttle between PGI's two main gates for over an hour and a half. The patient died before he could reach the emergency ward.

"We reached PGI when the prime minister had just arrived. The cops had sealed the road to the PGI emergency and we were told to use another gate. At the second gate, we were told to go to yet another place and from their directed back to the original gate. This delayed our reaching the hospital and Sumit died," said a family member accompanying the patient.

A large number of other patients, too, faced problems as they were barred from entering PGI till the prime minister left. Inside the hospital, the prime minister lamented that health services in the country were far from satisfactory. He exhorted the research scholars to uphold the motto of "service to the poorest and research for the good of all".

A dad from haryana, strangled his son-in-law to death and lock his daughter in a room to be raped by her relatives and friends for five days. The reason behind such a inhuman incident was that the boy and girl were of same gotra. Such a shame.

It would have been a familiar ending to a familiar story. Three years after a young couple fled their village in Haryana from families opposed to the 'same-gotra' union, the girl's family allegedly killed the 22-year-old man and locked up their daughter to be repeatedly raped by her relatives and their friends. She would have been killed too, say cops, but the gritty 21-year-old escaped from her captors and approached the police, turning in her father and other family members.

The gory turn of events began on Diwali day in Narela, outer Delhi, where the couple was tricked into joining a friend for celebrations. Police has arrested four people — the girl's father Daya Singh (50), her nephew Sandeep and his friends Pawan and Inderjeet — for the alleged 'honour killing' of her husband. They are also looking into claims by the girl that she was confined and raped by Sandeep and his acquaintances from October 17 to 22 when she managed to flee.

DCP (outer) Atul Katiyar said the victim shruti approached cops on October 26 with the help of a friend. Based on her account, police recovered the body of her husband, Virender Singh, from a canal in Sonepat district. A Maruti Van owned by Sandeep which was allegedly used to dump the body has also been seized.

Police said Shruti was 18 and a student of Class 10 when she fell in love with Singh, two years her senior at school. 'Their relationship was deeply resented by her family and the villagers of Mahara in Sonepat as both belonged to the same gotra. Unable to convince their families, they fled from the village in October 2006,' said Om Prakash, assistant commissioner of police for operations, Outer Delhi. Both were majors — Shruti was 18, while Virender was 19.

A case of kidnapping was lodged against Virender by the Sonepat police and he was arrested and sent to jail. In January 2007, even as Virender was in jail, Shruti was forcibly married to Jaipal, from Teli Khera village near Jind in Haryana. Jaipal began to abuse her when he came to know of her past and Shruti lodged a case with the Jind police. But no action was taken and a desperate Shruti contacted Virender who was out on bail.

The couple decided to reunite and Shruti left Jaipal to set up home with Virender in Samaipur Badli in outer Delhi. On August 8, 2008, they got married in a temple in Chandigarh.

'They shifted to Samalkha in Haryana after her father traced them in Samaipur Badli and threatened to kill Virender,' said an investigating officer. Meanwhile, angered by his 'wife's boldness', Jaipal lodged a kidnapping case against Virender with the Jind police. 'Fearing that they might be arrested again, the couple contacted the district collector's office in Jind and clarified that they had married of their own free will.'

That didn't help, though. The couple were arrested and Virender, who was working with a food company by then, was sent to jail again.

'The girl refused to go back to her father's place, fearing she would be killed, and stayed at the local Nari Niketan. All through Virender's trial, she maintained that she had gone with him of her own accord. The case was dismissed and Virender was freed,' said DCP Katiyar.

On October 17, Virender was invited by his friend Inderjeet to spend Diwali at Sandeep's house in Narela. The couple accepted, unaware that Sandeep would also be present.

Around 10.30pm on that day, Shruti's father, an ex-serviceman currently employed as a security officer, reached the house with his son and nephew and beat up Virender before allegedly strangling him to death.

'Shruti was allegedly raped by Sandeep and Inderjeet in another room. Sandeep carried the body in his van and dumped it in a canal after tying a stone around the neck. The girl was kept confined in a room in Narela and threatened to return to Jind or face death,' said Katiyar. Police are now investigating the role of other family members in the incident. 'Her first husband, Jaipal, is under the scanner too. The girl is still under severe trauma and we are providing counselling to her,' added the DCP.

On a day that symbolised the victory of Durga, a brave Muslim woman in a remote Jammu village axed to death a dreaded Lashkar terrorist without any help.

Police believe that the slain terrorist was Osama, a Pakistan-based LeT commander, wanted in many cases of extortion and terror related activities.

The incident happened when two terrorists barged into her house in Thana Mandi village in Rajouri district Sunday night. Showing a great presence of mind, Rashida Begum, who is in her early 40s, grabbed an axe that was at her hand's reach and flung it at the terrorists, killing one of the armed terrorists and injuring the other. Seeing his partner dead, the other terrorist took to his heels.

According to the police, the two terrorists of Lashkar-e-Taiba, the Pakistan-based group that carried out the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, had barged into Noor Ahmad's home around 9pm and wanted to seek revenge and hold the family hostage for refusing to give shelter to Pak based ultras.

Police said the two started beating the family members of Noor for not providing information on people who refused to harbour terrorists. Even as they were beating up the men, Noor's wife, Rashida rushed into the room and threw an axe at a terrorist from behind. The terrorist died on the spot.

She then charged at the second terrorist who was taken by surprise at the developments. Rashida and the rest of the family members managed to overpower him and snatch his weapon. However, the terrorist escaped under the cover of darkness, but not before receiving sharp cuts in the face-off with the furious housewife.

Security forces are combing the area for the escaped terrorist.

Goa Express-Mathura Mishap:Blame it on negligence of cops. 3 constables cant behold one bloody petty thief??

We all read in the news about the Goa Express train mishap near Mathura. Everyone is blaming on the drivers of the Goa Express train and his negligent driving. But the true story is that the Mewar Express(to which the Goa Express was rammed) was stopped in between two stations because of the chain pulled by someone.

The news says "The Uttar Pradesh police has registered a case against 'unknown persons' after it emerged that the Mewar Express had come to a sudden halt because the emergency chain was pulled, following which the Goa Express rammed into it, killing 22 people."

In Kota (Rajasthan), Additional Superintendent of Police, Bhupendra Sahu, refused to comment on whether an escape attempt by a criminal on the train led to the accident but added, "All the three officials involved in the incident have been suspended and an inquiry has been ordered."

The office of Senior Superintendent of Police, Mathura City, had earlier said it has received two separate complaints -- one relating to the train accident and the other being that of an accused escaping from custody of Rajasthan policemen.

It is alleged that Munna Sazid, an accused in a robbery case, was being taken from Kota to the national capital by the Delhi-bound Mewar Express for a hearing in a Tees Hazari court. He was being accompanied by three police constables of Rajasthan Police -- Ashok Kumar, Veerendra and Bahadur. At the Mathura station, Sazid asked for permission to go to toilet.

As soon as the train started gaining speed, he pushed one of the constables and jumped from the train prompting the police officials to pull the chain to bring it to halt, according to the complaint.
