Indian Police threw pregnant mother from train for not paying them bribe
Police officers taking bribe is not new in India. Its their bread and butter :)
But killing a pregnant women when the lady did not pay them bribe is totally unacceptable. Such policemen should be thrown out of the department immediately.
Read On..
Two police officers in India have been arrested after allegedly throwing a pregnant woman and her three-year-old daughter off a moving train for refusing to pay a bribe of 100 rupees.
According to a police report, Ram Singh and Sudhir Singh demanded the bribe on Thursday when Dinesh Kumar Lodh and his pregnant wife Kavita attempted to carry his bicycle into the train compartment when the couple boarded a train in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.
When Mrs Lodh said she was not carrying enough money, and instead offered a 5 rupee bribe, the railway officers allegedly pushed her from the train.
As she struggled to grab hold of the door, she fell under the wheels of the train and was killed instantly, witnesses said. The little girl, who had been sitting on her mother's lap, also fell out of the moving train but escaped with minor injuries.
Police bribes are a part of daily life in India, but this incident has caused widespread anger.
As news of the incident reached the family's village, a mob headed for the next stop - Tikuniya railway halt - where they attacked the two constables, causing multiple injuries.

Can such people be treated with non-violence?? for all those who preach non-voilence I would post this question to them. Please comment on how should such people be handeled. Shahina I would love to hear your point of view.
ReplyDeleteNon violence doesn't mean not taking any action or walking away from a problem.
ReplyDelete...beating up is not going to solve anything. If beating up should have solved the issues of this country then by now most of these atrocities should have vanished. The mob beats up people who commit crimes like these - we keep hearing them in our news!
Unless we have a system that respects its citizens and upholds the values of its police and other "protector" departments nothing is going to change.
Who gave him the right to push a lady? Is it this society? I would say yes. Can you even imagine this happening anywhere in the west?
Even if a woman is following a couple of yards away the man waits with the door held open if he happens to be at the door. The man and the woman are strangers by the way. And no, if the woman smiles and says thank you the man is not going to treat it as a come-on. You can safely look men in the eye and exchange conversations.
If a woman is with a kid she doesn't have to stand in the queue. Same with a woman who is carrying.
All this is asking for too much here in this country where the popular notion of masculinity is a warped definition of keeping women controlled like property.
Pushing a woman maybe not have even have registered as shameful to that policeman. Who knows this guy must have been frustrated that a woman confronted him!
The woman unfortunately died so mob fury was evoked.
If we want a society that has respect in it then punish these guys justly. You just cannot have such people in the police department. Beating up is just an emotional reaction. We need to go beyond that if something has to change in a big way.
If the government could not punish kasab who openly killed hundreds of people, do you think its going to punish these policemen..never
ReplyDeleteKasab is not walking free... and Never say never. Why doom this country. why not give it some hope.
ReplyDeleteI remember during the time when that silent placard holding thing that we did on Brigade road - Akash summarized it well - a resolve to at least make sure that we are not breaking laws though the system is rotten etc. - that we do everything we can from our end...
Also how some preconceptions of policemen were broken that day when many approached us and praised the initiative and even signed that card we had for the army martyr's father.
I guess that targetting govt is simple ... because they are the soft targets for anyone who wants to vent out their frustration (Dont mistake me by thinking that I am sympathetic about these morons). But I feel strongly in the line that our System is US our politicians are US and our society is US ... the govt doesnt erupt from some outer space that they should be taken as a seperate entity. I feel ashamed on the people of our country only ... If you look at it from a slightly different angle .. like dont take policemen and politicians as some seperate bunch of people .. they have come from within our own people ... they are as indians as us ... do you think all these rapists .. criminals and fraudsters and gangsters come from different world ? no they are indians ... so simply put .. what you sow is what you reap ... I have seen many people riding with their children .. sitting in front seat of their cars .. and they break signals the moment they realize there is no cop ... I have seen dads smoke cigs in front of their kids ... I have seen parents teaching their children "Beta this is your toffee dont share it with anyone" .. I have seen parents proudly discriminating between a girl and boy child .. I have seen parents openly teaching their girl daughters not to be too much open .. to keep quiet when some guests come home and all that and at the same time telling their boys to come and sing songs dance .. even show the latest fight move that he would have learnt when any guests drop by .. and mind it all these people are not illetrate villagers ... these are people working in software multinationals ... if they simply dont know what are the values of being good human being what will they teach to their own children ... and imagine what kind of society they will make when they grow big ??
ReplyDeleteI doon't think these police men are going to be punished, in the worst case they will be suspended from their work for few days. But the suspension is not going to bother any of them
